Ghetto Youths International laid
the foundation in 1989, for what promises to be the most sensational and
dynamic musical performances for the next millenium. In addition, the younger
Marleys have identified the spiritual source of their music, the children
of the ghetto, and now want to reach out and help that element through
charitable programs.
As quoted from the Jamaica Daily Gleaner in December of 1995, Steven
Marley, executive producer for Ghetto Youths, states,"We call
it Ghetto Youths because the youth are the source of the music. I didn't
grow up in the ghetto, but I am of the ghetto, and the music addresses
the elements of the ghetto, like "sufferation," striving and
the upliftment of poor people. So it is the voice of the ghetto speaking
to an international audience".
Ghetto Youths International has just signed threee new artistes: Chewstick,
Thundercat and Matlock. Look out for their new singles this summer.
New Releases
Grammy award winners Ziggy Marley and the Melody
Makers mastermind the operations of GYI and have worked to put out new
material from other members of the Marley family:
- Bob's mother, Mother B (Cedella Booker) is due to release her forthcoming
album "My Alter".
- In September of 1996, Damian "Jr. Gong"
Marley released his album "Mr. Marley". From a mixture of
the original Tuff Gong's classics, Jr. Gong has put together some brand
new lyrics to create what looks to be a very popular release. His first
single from the album is "Searching (So Much Bubble)". Look out
for his new single this summer "Me Name Junior Gong".
- The roar gets louder with brother Julian Marley's
"Lion in the Morning", released in October of 1996.
Julian and his band, The Uprising, are part of a new wave of artists who define the
next generation of reggae music.
